Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is “Deckplate Leadership”?

A: Deckplate leadership is the modern day term used by the United States Navy for the type of leader necessary for the success of an organization in today’s fast paced, ever-changing world. I would argue that it has emerged as a unique leadership model in and of itself, yet synergistic and somewhat dependent on the leadership models that currently exist in today’s business management/business administration worlds. I believe it is more of a mentality than anything else.

Q: Is this a new concept? Did you create it?

A: No and No. It has really begun to take on a life of its own over the past few years and has sort of become the new “buzzword”, but it has really been around since at least 1893. And arguably since the creation of the Navy 232 years ago…or even earlier!

Q: What is a Deckplate Leader?

A: Believe it or not that is actually a very loaded question, but The Master Chief Petty Officer of The Navy (MCPON) Joe Campa Jr. describes deckplate leaders as visible leaders who set the tone, know the mission, know their people and develop their people beyond their own expectations as a team and as individuals.

Q: How will you be accomplishing the goals of the site?

A: The main goal of this site is to examine the roles of deckplate leadership and find it’s application for a wide variety of professionals and organizations in and out of the Navy by:

1) Communicating and supporting the Mission, Vision, and Guiding Principles of the Master Chief Petty Officer of The Navy .

2) Discussing commonly taught leadership concepts as they relate to deckplate leadership.

3) Encouraging frank and open discussion of the key issues that directly impact the lives of our Navy’s Sailors and their families, as well as the leadership challenges they present for Deckplate Leaders.

4) Sharing the “nuggest of wisdom” passed on from generations of previous deckplate leaders.
